South America - Striker Arrested for Theft in Penalty Box!

1991 - Penarol v Nacional, Uruguyuan football's biggest derby and a passionate capacity crowd.

Nacional's striker Dely Valdez was famous for wearing gold chains and jewellery during matches. In the heat of the action, Penarol defender Goncalves was marking him as a corner was about to be taken. As they wrestled for position in the box, Goncalves ripped off one of Valdez's chains and hid it in his sock. 

In the atmosphere of the packed stadium, no-one saw what had happened. In the slow-motion replay however, the theft was clear to see. Police arrested Goncalves for the offence, but eventually dropped charges when he offered to return the chain!
